Note to self: print these verbs and tape to your desk to aid in engaging students in mathematics!
compareDiscussion during mathematics lessons is vital for students to truly learn concepts. We do students a disservice if we show them how to do everything. Our role as a teacher is to help our students by asking probing questions that keep them meaningfully engaged in the productive struggle of reaching a solution. According to research, allowing students the discomfiture of struggling to find an answer, increases their confidence. It's all about maximizing our students' opportunities to learn with understanding.
As a math teacher, it's my aim to engage my students in a way that helps them truly understand and apply the concepts to real-life situations. It isn't enough that they know the formulas that give them the answers, but that they understand the reasoning behind the formulas.
Speaking of formulas, it's also important that kids understand the use of technology in math. This probably should be put in another post, but I found this great online calculator to use on/with a classroom smartboard and just had to share!
