Indiana CORE Assessments for Teaching License

Students spend a fortune on college. And now they get to spend a fortune trying to get their teaching license.

Even though the state of Indiana has issued new passing scores, there is still a lot of room for improvement.

The testing company, Pearson, is raking in the dough at the expense of nervous students.

  • The tests are costly -- over $100 each.
  • The practice tests they sell at around $18.00 each and are basically irrelevant to the test. It appears they took a praxis test and slapped on the Indiana CORE label.
I managed to pass all but the math test on the first try. I took subtests in Reading/Language Arts; Science/Phys. Ed.; Social Studies/Fine Arts and the Special Education Pedagogy for Mild Intervention.

I am so blessed and fortunate to have passed those on the first try. Several of my colleagues did not.

It's not because we're dumb. It's because we are not being given any tools for which to prepare. No one can remember everything, and to expect a student to go into a testing situation for which no study materials are provided is blatantly unfair.

I think this article sheds light on the situation very well: Aspiring Teachers Stuck Without a License.

However, I can't agree with Pearson's claim that they provide a practice test and study guide. What they provide does not prepare one for the tests. The tests are vastly different from the preparation materials both in content and in how the questions are presented.

In the meantime, they have a monopoly on ripping students off.

I don't know how I'm going to prepare for the re-take of this exam. I've looked everywhere on the web for help and have found nothing. I've hired a tutor (which I'd hired before I took the test). And I just spent another $80.00 for two practice exams that claim to prepare me well for the exam. It looks like I've been scammed because they haven't showed up in my email and the website I ordered them from is giving me a 404 Error.

<sigh>

Color me fed up.

Remind me why I wanted to be a teacher again?
